Cooper Tuba Warmups

Instructions

1) Buzz Then Play – The purpose of this exercise is to focus on your ear and your buzzing. Play the first phrase buzzing on the mouthpiece, the second with the mouthpiece in the instrument, and then alternate back and forth throughout the exercise.

2) Chromatics – Focus on taking big breaths in the rest between the phrases. Let the air move the notes, not any muscles in your lips.

3) Tone Building – AIR! – Do this slow and loud. Breath as often as needed and focus on a nice open sound. Think ‘Toh”

4) Tongue- The purpose of this exercise is to get a player used to tonguing fast at a soft and loud tempo. A legato articulation should be used on each note articulation.

5) Dynamics- Play each repeated phrase 3 times starting mf, then f, then p. See how much of a contrast you can make on each new dynamic marking.
